The season of new beginnings is here, spring has finally arrived at Montalto Estate!
It’s true what they say, “No matter how long the winter, spring is sure to follow.” and boy, did that winter feel long!
Thanks to Storm Éowyn, our trails had been closed due to maintenance and repairs for over a month. This brought us back to the times of the Covid-19 global pandemic, in which public access was denied to the over 400 acres of beautiful flower gardens and hiking trails.
But, at long last, thanks to countless hours of dedication, commitment and drive from our outdoor gardening team, they were partially able to reopen to the public from March 10th. And for almost perfect timing, the transition from the cold, dark, barren winter period into the budding, blossoming, colourful springtime had just begun!

A sea of daffodils sweep across the estate. Towering rhododendrons shine bold and bright. Pockets of azalea, drimys, camellias, bluebells and more can be found sprinkled around the vast expanses of nature. The paths of our Lost Garden have become lined with colour, as the lush green vegetation starts to regrow, weaving its way back to life from the windswept emptiness of the months prior. Elsewhere, hidden deep amidst the trees, nestled between the branches are signs of life.
Strong, Stunning, Spectacular.
Wildlife has also seen a rejuvenation, native Irish honeybees have began to spread pollen, as baby ducks splash in the pond. Meanwhile, pine martens and woodpeckers leave traces concealed in the dense thicket.

The shop at Montalto has refreshed its offering, with an array of spring pots, planters, herbs and more to align with the current climate. Timely Spring flowers can be seen surrounding Montalto House, in our courtyard, Café and Visitor Centre areas to aid in celebration of the grand reopening of the Trails & Gardens. Spring means a prolonged solar cycle, warmer days, more sun and therefore… more fun!
